  • A child should wear at all times their helmet; knee pads and elbow pads when they are on the skateboard. If the child resists then show them pictures of some of the famouseskateboarders while practicing because most of them do wear at least the helmet.

When should a young child wear a helmet?

A young child should always wear a helmet when riding a bike or motorcycle. In most places, there are laws requiring anyone under a certain age (often 16 or 18) to wear a helmet. Of particular note: If the child is doing tricks on a bike, they definitely need a helmet. If the child is unstable, they definitely need a helmet. If the child is going at high speeds, they definitely need a helmet. If the bike is in poor condition or has brakes that are difficult to use, they definitely need a helmet. If the child is inexperienced with using the front brake, but does so anyway, they definitely need a helmet. If the bike is too small and therefore too top heavy, the child definitely needs a helmet. If the child has trouble following commands but still needs supervision, they definitely need a helmet. In general, whenever there is a high risk of the child running their head into something at high speed, and/or with the force of their body behind it, they should wear a helmet. Bikes move at high speeds. Even a child can reach speeds sufficient to cause severe injury or possibly even death on level ground, and anyone going down a hill can get sufficient momentum that even a helmet may not protect them from the worst of accidents. A 6% grade is steep enough that, given sufficient time, a biker will reach speeds in excess of 40 MPH, equivalent to the speed someone would be falling after they had fallen 60 feet. A head-on collision at this speed without a helmet would be like biking out of a 6th story window.

How to Pick The Proper Skateboarding Helmet?

Skateboarding first started out during the 1950's, starting out with wooden boards on roller skate wheels. By the mid 1960's, skateboarding really started to get popular. Skateboarding from then to now has evolved in many different ways, the boards, wheels, equipment, parks, and even the techniques have all evolved. To enjoy this sport you must have safety equipment such as knee pads, elbow pads, a helmet, and even a mouth guard. The helmet is very important because while you are riding your skateboard, you will fall down. Here are some steps to ensure you get the proper helmet. Step 1: Make sure the helmet meets the ASTM F1492 skateboard helmet standards. You can usually find the stamp of certification inside the helmet under the padding. Step 2: Don't use a bicycle helmet for skateboarding. Bicycle helmets are made for single impact only, while skateboard helmets for designed for multiple impacts. Remember reading in the introduction about you will fall? Chances are you will hit your head too, and probably more than once. Step 3: Try the helmet on for fit. The helmet must fit your head properly, have strong straps and buckle. The helmet must be able to stay on your heading during impact with the concrete. Step 4: Replace your helmet when there is visible damage. You won't need to replace your helmet each time your head meets the concrete, but you will need to inspect it. Replace the helmet if you notice the straps starting to come apart, or the buckle is no longer fastening properly. Your helmet must be fastened to your head properly in order to protect your brain. You can break a leg, or arm and they will heal. But your brain is different, break your head on the concrete and you will never skateboard or do much of anything else for the rest of your life, expect maybe lay there a drool over yourself. It is recommend that you visit Consumer's Report's website at www.consumer.org. They test different skateboard helmets and will provide you with more information on which skateboard helmet would be the best. Don't go cheap, or buy used, this is your brain we are talking about here.
