the first pointe shoes came out in the 1600's.for balance thought they had a heel on them and to do a leap or any kind of jump they had to use wires and when they did take the heel off they still used the wire because the box wasn't strong enough to take the weight to to get en pointe they used the wires too.

I'm sorry, but yes you do need to spend about $45-90 every time you need a new pair of pointe shoes. There is no way around this, but you can buy Jet Box Glue to help your pointe shoes last longer. I heard this helps a lot! Many online dance stores carry them.

Normally, you get a new pair when your old ones are dead (the shank broke/ the box is not hard anymore) or you get some new ones when you grow out of them (obviously. but hopefully your pointe shoe will be dead by the time your foot grows a whole size larger...)
