The Redskins were once located in Boston, and were called the Braves after the participants in the Boston Tea Party who disguised themselves as natives. As this caused confusion with the Major League Baseball National League Boston Braves (Now in Atlanta by way of Milwaukee), their owner changed their name to Redskins to differentiate them, while keeping the same mascot theme.

When the team moved to Washington, the name stayed the same, though the claim to the tea party heritage is now suspect, as that is a Boston event.
