In 146 BC the Romans conquered the Greek peninsula where a ball game called Episkuros or Phaininda was played. The Romans adopted this game which they called Harpastum. This game had similarities to soccer and some believe it evolved into the medieval form of Shrovetide fote-ball played in England and neighboring European countries which all modern football codes can trace their origins from.
