The initial breakaway in England came in 1895 but it took a few years for the game to first develop an identity of it's own and then get the Antipodes involved. The first organised league in Australia started in 1908.

On 27 August 1895, as a result of an emergency meeting in Manchester, prominent Lancashire clubs Broughton Rangers, Leigh, Oldham, Rochdale Hornets, St Helens, Tyldesley, Warrington, Widnes and Wigan declared that they would support their Yorkshire colleagues in their proposal to form a Northern Union. This was a break away from the Union code. 2 days later an embergancy meeting of all the clubs involed took place and an open leter of resignation for the RFU (in Briatain) was signed.

The NRFU merged in 1901, forming the Northern Rugby Football League. In additoon more clubs began to move across the codes form,ing teh Nation league status.
