The first World Series was played in 1903 and it was a best 5 out of 9 format. It was changed to a best 4 out of 7 for the following World Series and except for 1919-1921, when it was again a best 5 of 9, has remained a best 4 of 7.

The World Series has never officially ever been 2-2-1-1-1. Since 1924 every "best of seven" playoff series in Baseball has always been 2-3-2. Prior to 1924 the format was decided mutually between the the clubs involved and was generally alternating every other game (especially when played in the same city or in close proximity). The only year it was close to 2-2-1-1-1 was 1917 (White Sox vs. Giants), but that one was decided in 6 games and thus was 2-2-1-1, and it is uncertain where the 7th game would have been played.

Prior to 1969, there were no divisions in either league and the team that had the best win/loss record in each league won the pennant and advanced to the World Series.

Starting in 1969, the teams in each league were broken into two divisions. The teams that had the best won/loss record in each division advanced to the League Championship Series. The winners of each league's LCS advanced to the World Series. Between 1969-1985, the LCS was a best of 5 series ... starting in 1986 the LCS became a best of 7 series.

Starting in 1995, each league went from two divisions to three divisions which meant three teams, the three division winners, would advance to the playoffs. A fourth team in each league was needed to even things out so one wildcard team, the team that had the best won/loss record of all teams in the league that did not win their division, was added. This added another layer of playoffs and it was called the League Divisional Series which was, and still is, a best of 5 series. The teams that win their respective LDS meet in the LCS ... the team that wins the LCS advances to the World Series.

Since 1985, the winner of the NBA Finals has been determined through a 2-3-2 format. The first and last two games of the series are played at the arena of the team who earned home court advantage by having the better record during the regular season.
