Helmets were worn by most NFL players when the league started in 1920, however they were not made mandatory until 1943. The NCAA did not require players to wear helmets until 1939.

Back in the early 40's when T.V.'s came out
The wearing of helmets became compulsory after the death of Andrey Kivilev in 2003.
The Brooklyn Dodgers en masse started putting plastic liners into their tradition caps in 1941. Indiviudal players had been doing this though beforehand. Modern-day helmets were not manadated until 1971 and ear flaps not until 1982 or '83.

For protection. A baseball is a pretty hard object and should it hit you in the head travelling 80-90 miles per hour, the damage could be life threatening. The helmet helps cushion the blow and injuries are much less severe.
Baseball players begin wearing gloves in 1869. Doug Allison of the Cincinnati Red was the first player to wear gloves.
They started wearing helmets when a guy got tackled and he got an injury so they decided to make an invention that protects your head from you getting hurt. It's made of hard steel so when you bump into somebody you don't get an injury. That's when they started making helmets......
NHL players started wearing helmets as soon as the the 1928-29 season when Boston Bruins' player George Owen wore one. However, they carried a negative stigma that they did not begin to shed until after Bill Masterson died after suffering severe brain trauma in 1968. After that players began wearing helmets more often and in 1979 the league mandated that any players who signed professional contracts after that date would be required to wear a helmet. Players already playing in the league were exempt from this new rule. Craig McTavish would be the last player to play in the NHL without a helmet, retiring after the 1996-97 season.
