Phil Jackson was a player with the New York Knicks from 1967 to 1978, and was both a player and assistant coach for the New Jersey Nets from 1978 to 1981, retiring as a player in 1980. He coached in the CBA and BSN (Puerto Rico). It was not until 1987 that he became an NBA assistant with Doug Collins of the Chicago Bulls, and was promoted to head coach when Collins was fired in 1989.
