Why did Michael Jordan retire three times?

Jordan retired after the 93 season due to his dream to play Baseball. He came back during the 1995 season wearing number 45. After 3-peating a second time he felt his time was up along with his coach (Phil Jackson) moving to Los Angeles and retired a 2nd time in 1998. Jordan returned to the NBA in 2001 to prove he still had it. Indeed he did taking a downed Wizards team to the playoffs. Jordan's final game was in April 2003. He would retire a third and final time at age 40.
