Van der Sar initially decided to retire from international football after Euro 2008, but came out of retirement after the appointment of Bart van Marwijk as the Netherlands' coach, he played in the 2010 World Cup qualification matches after injuries to both the first and second Dutch keepers. His final cap, his 130th, came against Norway on October 15, 2008.
