The first well known example of the use of goalie pads was by George Merritt. He played for the Winnipeg Victorias in the 1890's, and used modified cricket shin guards in the Stanley Cup Challenge in 1896. Later, in 1924, after the creation of the NHL, Emil Kenesky modified the cricket design to the design used by goalies till well into the 1980's and 90's, along with becoming the first to widen the pad to 12 inches wide.
