The Frankford Yellow Jackets won the Philadelphia City title in 1922, then played non-conference games against established NFL teams in 1922-23, finishing the season with a record of 6-2-1. The team's success lead to the Frankford Athletic Association being offered an NFL franchise. They played under the name Yellow Jackets from 1924-1931, winning the NFL Championship in the 1926 season (awarded by record; there was no championship game until 1933).

1926 was the Yellow Jackets' only NFL championship. 1927 was a less-than-stellar year for the Jackets, due to a coaching change. They finished the season 6-9-3. Their record in 1928 was 11-3-2, placing them second in the league, behind the Providence Steam Roller. In 1929, the team record was 9-4-5, placing them third in the standings. 1930 was the beginning of the end for the Yellow Jackets, as they finished their season with an abysmal 6-13-1 record that included a 10-game losing streak. The team never finished the 1931 season. Plagued by financial problems caused by the Great Depression and lack of fan support, and forced to play the season as a travel team after a fire destroyed Frankford Stadium, the team finally collapsed. Their final game was against the Chicago Bears on October 26, 1931, a 13-12 loss.
