Coaches want to see a gymnast who will push him-/herself. The most important thing - even more important than competency - is a capacity to work hard. Out of hard work and focus comes the competency. Part of the measure of focus and determination is good form. Basically, if you can't do a handstand all the way up, you should at least do one with straight legs and arms and pointed toes. You want to show that you care about every little thing.

More pragmatically, strength, flexibility, and speed are also important. Build these out of your determination.
