It was decided to hold the first modern Games (1896) in Athens due to Greece being the country where the Olympic Games were first held more than 2500 years earlier.
The founder of the modern Olympic Games was a Frenchman by the name of Pierre de Coubertin, who was born in the French Capital, Paris, in 1863. He was also the President of the International Olympic Committee and remained as an honorary presidednt until his death in 1937, when he passed away in the Swiss city of Geneva.
