Would you believe that the longest match in tournament play lasted for a total of twenty hours and fifteen minutes? The match was between the great Chess masters Ivan Nikolic and Goran Arsovic. The match was held in an arena in the city of Belgrade, in the former Yugoslavia. The arena was filled with spectators for this momentous event, but the match was so long that some people fell asleep in their seats; others were so exhausted that they decided to go home. The next morning, when people heard that the match had not finished yet, they were astounded. They were so shocked, in fact, that many made their way back to the arena to continue watching. They could not believe that the match was still going on! During the entire match Nikolic and Arsovic took no breaks. Not only did they not eat, but neither drank any water either. After the match, both players were understandably exhausted. By the time all was said and done, they had made a total of 269 moves and Ivan Nikolic eventually came out on top.

Well, I am only eleven years old but I'm in a chess club and my friend and I went on for about 3 hours straight.

At the highest level, players have 2 1/2 hours each to make the first 40 moves. After that another "time control" begins, usually the next day. Games can, but very rarely do, go 100 moves or more. There is no theoretical limit.
