Faith Penny of East Islip, New York. sets world 9 year old Long Jump record!

On June 16th 2007 East Islip Track Clubs Faith Penny set the World record in the Long Jump for a 9 year old girl. Noted in the results is the USATF Youth Bantam record held by Ramona Carryl of New York of 15' 6" which broke a 33 year old record.

Carryl was 10 years and 7 months old when she set that record. 2005 AAU Jr. Olympic Champion Faith Penny was 9 years 8 months and 3 days old when she achieved her mark. I would imagine it is somewhere near or under 5 minutes in the U.S, but can't find the actual answer right now. AAU and USATF JO results for the 1500 for that age group supports this answer. The previous answer of 7:15 is way off...my son ran faster than that in the mile at age 7, and there's still plenty out there at the AAU and USATF national events that can beat him.

Answer:

We would have to actually witness a 9 year-old run a 5 minute mile to believe it!!

It took generations for a man to finally run it inside 4 minutes: being eventually, Roger Bannister and Herb Elliot. I think it would be nigh on impossible for any 9 yr old to cover in 5 mins!!!

Answer:

Check out http://aauathletics.org/results/2009/jogames/daily/dayfourResults.htm for just this year's 1500 meter results for sub-bantam boys. The winning time was 5:13.64 and the kid was still 8 when he ran that time. Sub-bantam means he does turn 9 before Dec. 31st this year. The national AAU record (listed just above these results) for sub-bantams is 4:57.47, which translates to a sub 5:20 mile. Since this is just the record for the AAU meet, my guess is that the overall U.S. record is near or under 5 minutes. My son who just turned 8 runs the 1500 in a little over 6 minutes...look for him to break into the 5's next year when he reaches the sub-bantam age group at AAU nationals.

There are some very fast kids out there. I think if you go to eliteyouthrankings.com, you will see that the age groups may differ between USATF and AAU. USATF is by birth year. AAU has different designations. My son is 9 and just ran a 5:07 1500. He is not first on this year's outdoor list at all. His road mile was 5:28 a few weeks ago. The US youth record for the 1500 for Bantams is 4:43. That translates to a 5:03 full mile. Sadly, you can't find that kid anywhere in the running world now and he should be tearing up the track in high school by now. Records are cool, but long-term love of sport better! : )

Somewhere near or under 5 minutes. Just this year, the winner of the 1500 meter (little less than a mile) at that age at the AAU JO was just over 5 minutes.

Every person runs at a different pace and there is no specific time that every 9 year old girl can run a mile in. Some 9 year old girls may run a mile in 6 minutes while others run it in 12.
