The BCS began in 1998. It replaced the Bowl Alliance, which had attempted to match up the top two teams during the seasons from 1995-1997. Prior to that, the Bowl Coalition was used from 1992-1994.
Before 1992, there was no system in place to ensure that #1 would play #2 in a bowl, and in fact such matchups rarely happened.
