That was a blocking formation known as the flying wedge. Blockers would line up in a 'V', get a hold of each other, and charge toward the defense with the ball carrier somewhere behind. The flying wedge was introduced by Harvard in a game against Yale in 1892. It became such a dangerous play that it was outlawed in 1895 due to the numerous injuries suffered.
