Mia Hamm's childhood was misunderstanding and fun. As a child Mia had a love for soccer so her parents signed her up for the pee-wee soccer league. She liked to play soccer with her adopted Thai American brother Garret who had a rare aplastic anemia disease that happens when someone's bone marrow is either destroyed or not able to function correctly. Garret died in April 1996 at the age of 28.Mia's heart was broken said her parents. But that didn't take away Mia's courage or confidence.
