Actually, Don William Zimmer never played for the New York Yankees. Nicknamed Popeye for his extraordinary strength, he joined the Yankees in 1996 as Joe Torre's bench coach. Prior to his managing and coaching career, he spent a number of years (1949-1965) as a Major League Baseball player. Originally signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers as an amateur free agent, he spent most of his career as an infielder. In addition to the Dodgers, he also played for the Chicago Cubs, the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds and the Washington Senators. From there, he went on to manage and coach a number of major league teams including the San Diego Padres, the Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers and the Chicago Cubs - finally joining the Yankees in 1996. He'll probably be remembered for lunging after Boston Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez during Game 3 of the 2003 AL championship series. Zimmer quit as Yankees bench coach after that season. He did earn the recognition as 1989 NL Manager of the Year. - additional information to original post - The question asks what number Don Zimmer wore when he was with the Yankees. Don was a coach with the Yankees from 1984-1987, and again from 1996-2003. During those years, he wore many different jersey numbers, including 23, 40, 48, 49, 50, 52, 53 and 54. Beginning in 1996, Don's jersey number reflected how many years he had spent working in organized baseball. He did not wear #51 since that was Bernie Williams number. - Brad Wackerlin, www.collectingzim.com ----
