I had an 1986 Honda shadow VT1100 (loved it) and I ran mid grade with no problems. You can run 87 octane with no problems.
Regular unleaded 87 octane.
SAE 10w30 full synthetic.

10W40, according to my Hanes manual - 10W30 in cooler climates.
