A gait is something a horse does, such as gallop and jump. There is no horse that is a gait.
A gait is a type of speed, like a walk or run. A canter is the same as a skip. Usually the term canter is used for a horse's gait in between a jog and a full out run. A skip usually is the term for human's gait but generally the same idea applys.

It depends on the type of horse you are talking about. A normal, everyday sort of breed then they would have 4 gaits, walk trot canter and gallop. Some breeds have more than four gaits. For example, the Standardbred can pace, the Tennessee Walker has a running walk, etc. This gaits are unique to their specific breeds. Within each gait, there are variations, especially for a dressage horse. These are extended, collected, working, and medium. However, these are variations and NOT gaits. A gait is defined by a unique footfall. Variations, on the other hand, take place within a gait and have to do with the speed of the gait and the collection of the horse.

There is no one specific breed of horse that is more commonly used in hippotherapy, but horses that are selected to work in the hippotherapy setting have several characteristics in common:First, they posses an exceptional walk. The walk gait provides the sensory and motor input to the patient that the success of the treatment is built upon. The symmetry and rhythm of the horses gait are of paramount importance.Second, the horse must possess a suitable temperament to accept the challenges that accompany this type of work. Horses in the hippotherapy setting should be quiet, well trained and accepting of new or unusual situations. Horses are carefully screened for their physical and mental characteristic that will provide exceptional medical benefit to the patients being treated.Third, they will be chosen in regards to the clients that the particular clinic or program are treating. For example, a pediatric therapy clinic will select a different type and size of horse than a veterans' rehabilitation clinic does.
