Some horses can free pace but they are quite rare. Even if horses free pace whilst training they normally waer hopples durin a race just incase they do break gait.

I have a miniature horse that definitely prefers gaiting when in harness. He also trots and canters but has a definite saddle rack or singlefoot gait, and he is quite happy doing it and actually seems to prefer it when harnessed and pulling his cart.
