I would imagine that others, such as Stephen Hawking, gather inspiration from Gehrig's speech and use it to lift them up when they consider what they must face in life. Gehrig was a fighter. He refused to hold his team back and retired from baseball rather than be less than he could be. I admire Hawing as much because he has remained productive mentally as his body has deteriorated. Lou Gehrig set the standard for coping with ALS.

In the year 1824 a scientist named Charles Bell published a paper discussing this previously unknown disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. In 1939, baseball player Lou Gehrig contracted this disease. Since he was so well known at the time, the disease was nicknamed the Lou Gehrig Disease.
