Gaelic Football is played at many different age categories. There is also clubs, schools and colleges competitions. There are competitions within counties, within provinces and All-Ireland competitions. All have their main competitions, principally their All-Ireland Final.

The biggest of all the competitions, and Ireland's main sporting competition, is the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. It features the county teams of senior players, who are normally all over 18, although there is also an under 21 competition. The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship runs from May to September each year.

As part of the All-Ireland Championship, each of Ireland's 4 provinces has its own championship. The second biggest competition is the League, which finishes in late April or early May, before the championship starts.

As of the end of the 2015 Championship, in terms of All-Irelands won it's Kerry(37), Dublin(25), Galway(9), Meath(7) and Cork(7). However there are many other factors to be taken into consideration, like the current status of counties. Dublin are the reigning champions, having won the 2015 final. So it is very difficult to give an accurate answer to the question. Things are always changing.

Gaelic Football is played 12 months a year. For inter-county level the two largest competitions are the National League and the All-Ireland Championship. The All-Ireland Championship is the biggest. The League runs from about late January or early February to early May. The Championship runs from May to September.

However there are many grades of teams and their are championships in those grades too, like at club level. The best club players make it to the county teams, but are still playing with their clubs. When the All-Ireland Championships finish in September, the club championships are in progress and continue through the winter.

There are also other inter county competitions as well as the League and Championship at different stages of the year. So while there are some major peaks in the year, there are matches being played from the 1st of January to the 31st of December every year.

Gaelic football teams have 15 players. There are a huge amount of teams in Ireland, for various age categories. There are thousands of teams in the country, as there are many clubs and all clubs have a number of teams. The best players in each county get chosen to play for the county team. Again there are different age categories. Schools have teams. Colleges have teams. Universities have teams. Many companies and professional organisations have teams. Many players will play for several teams , like by playing for their club and for their county. Wherever there are Irish communities outside Ireland, you would also find Gaelic Football teams, so there are many in different parts of the world. All teams are amateur. No players get paid.

There are many Gaelic Football cups. The most important and the one you are probably referring to is the Sam Maguire Cup. It is presented to the winners of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.

How many Gaelic football teams are there?

There are over 2500 GAA clubs in Ireland. Within each club there can be many teams for different age categories and ability. Some players would be playing for more than one of those teams. Some clubs concentrate more or even exclusively on Hurling and others on Gaelic Football. Outside of clubs there are teams representing all levels of educational institutions from school to universities. Many workplaces have teams too. So because there is such a variety of teams, it is very difficult to know how many people play Gaelic Football. It is the biggest sport in Ireland.
