It will depend on his size. Some kids have larger hands than others. Whatever size fits his hand. Don't make it too tight though. Give his hands some breathing room and some growing room. Probably somewhere in the 9.5" to 10.5" range is what you're looking at. Both above answers are good answers, although I would qualify that by saying that a glove is the most personal piece of equipment that a player has. A lot of choosing a glove is personal preferance - what the player likes and what works best for him. To explain a little: There are two basic schools of thought in choosing a glove for a beginning hardballer. One is to get a glove that is a little larger to give the player some 'margin for error' (with a bigger pocket) and allow him to perform a little better and be more comfortable and confident in the learning process. (There are limits. Charlie Brown's glove is too big. haha) The other school of thought is a smaller, tighter fitting glove is better to make it a more natural extension of his arm/hand and develop a more 'sure hand.' This approach can be frustrating and is not always the best one, depending on many factors. (I, and my son, subscribe to the latter theory. He has had some tough times, though, but has developed nicely defensively because of it.) Something to start thinking about is glove size for position. Infielders (generally the 'best defensiveman') typically have smaller gloves to be able to get to, catch and deal the ball quickly. Pitchers tend to have larger gloves in order to be able to hide the ball some (while adjusting grip) and better protect themselves from line drives. First baseman also have large (specialized gloves) in order to 'scoop and reach' for balls that aren't right on the mark. Outfielders have HUGE gloves to extend their reach. It's worth thinking about and doing some research and experimentation, because 85% of the game (or better) is some form of catching and throwing the ball. A player must be able to master this or he can't play ball. Remember: "Offense wins games, but defense wins championships."
