In Jesse Owens' own words, "Although I wasn't invited to shake hands with Hitler, I wasn't invited to the White House to shake hands with the President either." Owens met with a great deal of racism in his own home country. He traveled with his team at a time when blacks weren't allowed to eat in most restaurants or use most public rest rooms.

It took 40 years for Owens to be invited to the White House: in 1976, President Gerald Ford presented him with a Medal of Freedom. Three years later, President Jimmy Carter presented him with a Living Legend Award. And in 1990, ten years after he died, President George Bush honored Owens posthumously with the Congressional Medal of Honor. Owens' widow received it in her husband's name.

Jesse was not invited to the white house by President Roosevelt, but was invited by President Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford.
