Defensive midfielder is necessary. However if you have two center midfielders who are not speedy attacking guys, it's fine.

two side backs and two tall thick center backs.

I suggest 4-1-3-2.

Having three defenders is pain in the ass. You need to have two defensive midfielders and.. it just doesnt work out these days.

There are typically 4 defensive players on the field for a soccer team. with the exception of the rarity of having 3 or 5 defenders. There are 2 main formations that are used: the diamond and the flat-back. The diamond formation consists of a sweeper in the far back, a stopper in front of the sweeper, and fullbacks on their respective sides on each side of the field. The flat-back formation is a formation where defenders place themselves in a "line" parallel to the goal. The fullbacks are the same as in the diamond formation, but instead of a sweeper and a stopper, this formation has 2 centerbacks. This players control the center of the defense and are usually designated to a side (left or right) but are somewhat flexible on where they roam along the defense.
