As of 2009, there have been 17 perfect games in MLB history; all of them by different pitchers. A perfect game occurs when a pitcher retires all 27 batters without allowing anyone on base for any reason at all.

No-hitters are a bit more common. Since 1875, there have been 256 no-hitters in the MLB. A no-hitter is different from a perfect game. Errors, walks, hit batters, and fielder's choices can occur. As long as nothing is recorded as an official hit, the no-hitter remains intact.

Great answer. The finest perfect game was probably the only one thrown in a World Series, the 1956 gem tossed by Don Larsen of the New York Yankees against a very talent-laden Brooklyn Dodgers team that included sluggers Duke Snider, Carl Furillo, Jackie Robinson and Gil Hodges.

The greatest pitching feat is arguably the back-to-back no-hitters thrown by Johnny van der Meer in 1939 (I think), though they weren't exactly the finest no hitters. Van der Meer didn't have the greatest control and so walked a number of batters enroute to his record making achievement.
