The Dallas Cowboys drafted quarterback Roger Staubach in the 10th round of the 1964 National Football League college draft. The 1963 Heisman Trophy winner might have been taken higher by an NFL team under normal circumstances. But Staubach attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, which meant that he had a five-year military obligation to deal with first.

The Cowboys were willing to wait for Staubach as a future prospect, and their gamble paid off handsomely. From 1971 to 1979, he led the Cowboys to six NFC Championship Games, four Super Bowls and two Super Bowl titles. He also was a Pro Bowl selection five times. Staubach was inducted into the Cowboys' Ring of Honor in 1983 and enshrined at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio in 1985.
