When L (50) is preceeded by X (10) you deduct 10 from 50 to get 40. V adds 5 and I adds 1 giving you 46.

In constructing roman numerals, if a smaller number preceedes a larger number, you subtract it's value from the larger number. Numbers are not generally repeated more than 3 times in a row. Below is a counting example.

I = 1

II = 2

III = 3

IV = 4

V = 5

VI = 6

VII = 7

VIII = 8

IX = 9

X = 10

XI = 11

XII = 12

XIII = 13

XIV = 14

XV = 15
