---- The oldest pro basketball franchise is the Philadelphia 76ers. They began in 1939 as the Syracuse Nationals, seven years before the Celtics. The Nationals joined the NBA in 1949, after spending ten years in the Basketball Association of America. The franchise moved to Philadelphia in 1963 and became the 76ers.
* While this is true, it should be noted that during WWII, the franchise was inactive from 1942-1945 (see Wikipedia entry for Philadelphia 76ers). The longest continually operating franchise is therefore the Detroit Pistions, which began operation in 1941 as the Ft.
