World War 2 led to the creation and popularity of women's baseball due to the shortage of male baseball players. With many men serving in the military, women were given the opportunity to play professional baseball in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). The league gained attention and became popular during the war years and continued for a few years after the war ended.
Yes, there was major league baseball during World War I. The 1918 season was shortened when the US Government required the game to finish its regular season by Labor Day, which meant each team played between 125-130 games instead of the 154 they usually played. Many teams required their players to participate in military drills during their off time. Many players went into the service and many went to work for factories making munitions to be used in the war effort. But MLB carried on with the Chicago White Sox winning the 1917 World Series and the Boston Red Sox winning the 1918 World Series.

Military threats drastically reduced in the early 1900s because nations started collaborating more and international laws started to take shape. The formation of the league of nations came up as a result of those 1900s laws.
