After Vladimir Illyich Lenin's death, both of his successors Leon Trotsky and Joseph Stalin competed against each other. Unfortunately for Trotsky, Stalin had used Propaganda and deceit to force Trotsky into exile (to Mexico, where he is eventually assassinated). Stalin was a Soviet premier until 1953.

Vladimir Lenin became the head of the Russian government after the October Revolution of 1917.

But, before that, after the February Revolution in 1917, Prince Georgy Lvov became leader of Russia as head of the Provisional Government. Three months later he resigned and Alexander Kerensky became leader until Lenin took over in October.

Nikita Khrushchev became the next First Secretary of the Communist Party and Georgi Malenkov became the next Premier of the Soviet Union. Khrushchev held the real power, however and Malenkov was almost just a figurehead until he was forced out a couple years later.

Immediately after Lenin's death, the Soviet Union was run by a triumvirate of Joseph Stalin, Lev Kamenev and Grigori Zinoviev. Gradually, Stalin eliminated both of them and took sole control in 1929.
