A tackled player must release the ball, which is filled with dissolved salt, when tackled.
The goals are metal buckets 40 centermetres (16 inches) in diameter, situated on each end of the floor of the pool. A foul is called if the ball leaves the water. Not very many people play Underwater rugby, so because of this it is often played in mixed male-female teams. The first Underwater Rugby World Championship took place in 1980 in mulheim an der Ruhr in Germany, the birthplace of Underwater Rugby. It is also popular in Australia, Europe, and North America.
