It's an area designated specifically for the referee to run down the field unimpeded so that he can follow the play closely and make an accurate call. The team and coaches should all be behind that line, so that the referee doesn't have to run into the field of play and possibly interfere with the athletes.

What is a strip for a horse?

A strip, usually called a stripe, is a narrow stripe of white hair that runs down the front of the horse's face. It is often confused with a blaze but the two are different. A lot of times the stripe will be joined by a star at the top and a snip on the lower nose. This combination is ofter called a "star-stripe-snip". When the white markings are wide it is called a "blaze". If the white extends over the eyes at the top and over the nostrils at the bottom it is called a "bald or apron". The bald/apron pattern is very common in the Paint breed and Pinto color. Sometimes the whole head will be white except the ears. This is called a "medicine hat". To certain tribes of American Indians medicine hats where highly prized and were be thought to have mystic powers.
