Well first let me preface my answer with the fact that 500 meters isn't actually a worldwide race. However, the 500-yard freestyle is an American-only event. So there isn't a WR, but the AR as of April 2008 is 4:08.54 held by Peter Vanderkaay. The American Record for the 500 meter dash is 57.72 by Scott Ruvolo July 1984 in Norwalk California.
