If the coin is in circulated condition its value is determined by the amount of gold it contains, adjusted for wear. Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 03/2010:

Very worn condition - $1,340

Moderately worn - $1,380

Slightly worn - $1,440

Almost no wear - $1,494

If the coin is uncirculated, look on the back to see if there's a small mint mark letter. It may be blank or there may be an S.

No mint mark (Philadelphia): $1,560 to $70,200 depending on quality

"S" mint mark (San Francisco): $1,560 to $6,510

Please provide to me the date and the coin's mint state and subsequently I will be able to relay to you its value.1914-S extra-fine

The coin is a 1928 St. Gaudens $20 double eagle. It looks like the mint is S with L over it. It is very difficult for me to see.

A common $20 US gold coin has .96 oz. of pure gold the minimum value is Gold spot times 96 so as of today 880 X .96 = $844.80 January 20th,2008. However, if it is in superior condition, it is worth more as a collectable.

The 20 Pesos coin is hands down one of the most visually appealing coins in the historical era, featuring a detailed representation of the Aztec calendar on the obverse of the coin, and the modern Mexican coat of arms on the reverse. It was minted in comparatively low numbers. None the less it presently is considered a bullion gold coin and sells for just over the spot price of gold for it's gold weight, which is .4823 oz. of gold.

Difficulties with the original design caused the Mint to strike several different varieties of St. Gaudens $20 gold pieces in 1907. Most of those released for circulation were low-relief coins with standard edges. Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 07/2012:

Very worn condition - $1,910

Moderately worn - $1,930

Slightly worn - $1,940

Almost no wear - $1,982

Uncirculated - $2,110 to $50,000 depending on quality

These prices are in line with other dates for common St. Gaudens pieces. If you have one of the rarer high-relief pieces, corresponding values are:

Very worn condition - $4,200

Moderately worn - $6,540

Slightly worn - $8,220

Almost no wear - $13,088

Uncirculated - $16,690 to $650,000 depending on quality

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
