The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) began in 1938 and the NCAA Tournament debuted the following year. The NIT field expanded quickly and became the premier tournament during the 1940's; so much so that the NCAA scheduled their tournament after the NIT to avoid directly competing with it.
This allowed teams to compete in both tournaments, with City College of New York being the first and only school to win both titles in the same year (1950). The rules were subsequently changed so a team would only qualify for one or the other.
