The movements include collected, medium, and extended trot; collected and extended canter; extended and medium walk; counter canter; flying change of lead; shoulder in; half pass; and halt. The purpose of the dressage test in eventing is to demonstrate that the horse is obedient to the rider's directions - an absolute necessity for a cavalry mount, cavalry competitions being the origin of modern eventing. In addition, the dressage is done on the first day of the competition (or, in lower-level competitions that are completed on a single day, the first thing in the morning) to show that the horses are obedient even when they are rested and full of energy. The dressage tests ridden by eventers are less demanding than those ridden in regular dressage competitions, and the stadium jumping (third phase) is less demanding than that ridden by the jumpers. The eventing horses are generalists who must do a lot of things well, as opposed to dressage or stadium jumping horses who can concentrate on doing one thing extremely well.
