The Belmont Stakes is the longest American Triple Crown race, the last race in the series at 1 1/2 miles over a dirt oval track of 1 1/2 miles. Belmont Park is the largest dirt track in America. The race is a trial to win because the race is long and the stretch is longer than the traditional 1 mile oval tracks in America. The record for the distance and the race itself is held by the great Triple crown Winner, Secretariat in 1973, with a winning world dirt record time that still stands today of 2:24.

Who is favored to win triple crown in 2012?

Horses are never favored to win the triple crown. The triple crown is NOT a race - but the total of three races. They are the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. The colt I'll Have Another won the first two legs of the TC (Derby and Preakness) but was scratched from the Belmont the day before the race due to a bowed tendon. He has been retired from racing but is in excellent health.
