The Montreal Canadiens were formed in 1909 as a member of the National Hockey Association. The club, originally known as the Club Athletique Canadien, was created by the NHA in response to the all-French Le National club formed by the competing Canadian Hockey Association. The CHA folded after only a few weeks of play, and the Canadiens were purchased the following year by athletic promoter Georges Kendall (known in Anglo-Canadian society as George Kennedy). In 1917, when the NHA ceased operations, Kendall joined with the rest of his fellow owners in forming the National Hockey League.
