Gordie Howe, the NHL's revered "Mr. Hockey", turned 52 years old during the last week of his 1979-80 season with the Hartford Whalers. He played in all 80 games that season, and not just as a cameo. He scored 15 goals. For several years before that, he played in the former World Hockey Association, whose New England/Hartford Whalers were among four WHA teams (Hartford (now the Carolina Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, Quebec Nordiques (now the Colorado Avalanche), and Winnipeg Jets (now the Phoenix Coyotes, with an expansion franchise returning this season to Winnipeg, by their old name) that merged for the '79-'80 season with the NHL.
