If you are playing in a certain position in Netball and cross a third where you are not allowed to be, this is called off side and there is a penalty. This penalty is that the opposing team will be awarded to the ball and it is a turnover. To cross into another third that you are not allowed to be in is if your foot is over that line. Center can go over all thirds and she can only get off side if her foot or part of her body passes the goal circle marker. Wing Attack can only go in its two attacking third, this is the same for Goal Attack. Wing Defense and Goal Defense both are only allowed in the center and defensive third whilst Goal Keeper and Goal Shooter are only allowed in the defensive third for Goal Keeper and Goal Shooter can only go in its attacking third

Offside is an infringement which occurs when a player enters a part of the court in which her/his position is not permitted to go, either with or without the ball.

A player is also deemed offside if during a throw in, she/he steps behind an offside area whilst in possession of the ball, even though she/he is out of court. (eg a Wing Attack taking a throw in on the attacking baseline may not step behind the goal circle to throw the ball)

A player outside the court who is NOT in possession of the ball, may step or run behind an offside area without incurring an infringement.

offside is where a player steps into a space on the court where they are not allowed. eg. Centre goes into the goal circle, Goal Shooter steps into the middle- third, Goal Defence goes into their teams' attacking third and so on.

The difference between being off court and off side is that when you are off court you are literally not on the court - you have come out of the court and so are not inside the rectangle of paint known as the court.

When you are offSIDE, you are not in the third/s you need to be (and for many players, you are in the semi-circle, which is a big no-no). For instance, the centre player can be in the first, second and third thirds but is not allowed in the shooting semi-circles at any time. A wing attack is allowed in their attacking third but NOT the circle and the middle third. A goal keep is allowed in their defending third and no where else. If a player is off-side then the other teams get posession of the ball.

Hope that helps.

When you go into an area that your position isn't designated (allowed) to be in for example GS (goal shooter) going into the center third when they are only designated to be in the end third.

In netball, being offside means being in the wrong area of the netball court.

so if center went in any of the two semi circles, she'd be offside.

The offside rule in netball simply means you have gone out of your boundary and trodden over the line your position isn't allowed to.

How has the offside rule changed?

The original offside rule was that if any attacking player is ahead of the last defender when the ball is played then the attacking player must be given offside. The player must be given offside even if he doesn't receive the pass. The new rule is that the player can only be given offside if he is interfering with play i.e. he receives the ball, he obstructs defending players, blcoks the goalkeepers view, etc.
