The term comes from the 19th Century when an Oxbridge football team called the Corinthians, chose to always play for the pleasure of taking part in the game, doing their best, but fairly. Rather than win at any cost, it was about "may the best man win", but most importantly, fairly, in a gentlemanly manner.

It is said that if a member of an opposing team was taken off through injury, the Corinthians removed one of their own players to keep the game level & fair.

Why the football team were called the Corinthians, is another question altogether.......!

Also, it has nothing to do the original Corinths of Ancient Greece.
