In the Top 14 play-off match between Racing Metro and Clermont on 7 May 2010 Francois Steyn drop goaled from a full 60 metres away, clearing the posts by an additional 20 meters.

Second Longest Drop Goal:

Zinzan Brooke kicked a 47 metre drop goal for New Zealand during the 1995 world cup.

Any kick in excess of 60 meters is considered exceptional.
Given a tail wind and high altitude, I suspect kickers have reached 70 meters.

The Springbok Fullback [Francois Styne] kicked 3 over successfully last weekend [12 Sep 2009] from inside his own half against the All Blacks which was VERY impressive.

In general the drop kick is used in or near the opposing teams 22 to score points by kicking the ball over the Cross bar for 3 points

It is also employed by a team to start a match by drop kicking the ball 10 meters of more from the halfway line to the opposing team, at any point whilst the ball is in play, from a defending teams 22 meter line to restart the game following a ball rolling dead or being touched down by the defending team once the ball has crossed the try line from an opposing play who did not touch the ball down to score a try.

The other use and its rarely seen is once a ball has been positioned for an attempt to convert a try - the ball falls over as the player makes their run up for the kick the player may pick up the ball and drop kick it over for the conversion

I believe the the record still remains that of the Welsh Fullback Paul Thorburn who booted the longest ever penalty kick for Wales against Scotland at the Cardiff Arms Park 1986. A total of 70 meters - Basically it was closer to the Welsh posts than those of the Scots - Wales went on to win. In the words of the legend that was Bill Mclarren - That was the monster of all monster kicks -
