Answer

The goal post are now, as of 1991, 18'6" high...and 23'4" across!

The posts in 1991 were changed from a width of 23'4 to 18'6. The height has always been 10 feet. Before 1959 the posts were 18'6 in width. I am sure early on the dimensions were all over the place.

Why is a field goal called a field goal in basketball?

The football, after being kicked by the place kicker, must travel over the crossbar and between the two uprights of the goal post. It can hit one of these bars, but it must then bounce in such a way that it still goes over the crossbar and between the uprights. There is no limit on how high the football can go. The "uprights", though they have a finite physical length, are considered, for the purposes of the game, to extend upward infinitely.

What is the width of a high school field goal?

24 feet from the inside of the goal post(upright) to the other inside post (upright). 10 feet above the ground to the inside edge of the cross bar. In high school the ball must be completely inside the inside edge of the post(upright) extended. If any part of the ball passes over the upright the kick is no good. The posts must extend a minimum of 10 feet above the crossbar to help make this determination..
