Well first let me preface my answer with the fact that 500 meters isn't actually a worldwide race. However, the 500-yard freestyle is an American-only event. So there isn't a WR, but the AR as of April 2008 is 4:08.54 held by Peter Vanderkaay. The American Record for the 500 meter dash is 57.72 by Scott Ruvolo July 1984 in Norwalk California.

Don't know about anyone else but it's been a nightmare trying to find an answer. Surely there must be a world record but I can't find it recorded online. It isn't an Olympic dicipline but still...

The fastest time I can find was Thomas Lurz swim in Rome 2009 - 56.26.9
