What is the difference in world snooker rankings and provisional rankings?

For practical reasons, the official rankings are only updated once a year. The provisional rankings are what the current status would be, but have not have been made official. For example, half way through the season, some players would have played very well, so their provisional ranking would be higher than their official ranking.
