Hooking in the NHL is using you stick to impede the progress or movement of offensive player, (usually the play with the puck) by getting your stick around the waist and/or parallel to with the hands and wrists of the puck carrier.

If caught by the referee, the infraction is usually a 2 minute minor penalty.
